The united commissions of Human Rights and Justice approved the project of the call for the election or, where appropriate, re-election of the president of the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH), María Rosario Piedra Ibarra, for the period 2024-2029.
The legislative bodies chaired by Reyna Celeste Ascencio Ortega and Javier Corral Jurado, respectively, also declared themselves in permanent session, since there is a process of analysis of the document, this, because the draft call was submitted to the Board of Political Coordination, in order to promote understandings and convergences that allow it to be fulfilled in a timely manner.
“Once it has been endorsed by the Jucopo, the project will be returned to the united commissions, so that they can issue the call of the Senate of the Republic for the election of the president of the CNDH,” highlighted Senator Javier Corral.
He added that the senators will not carry out a simulation process or with predetermined decisions, for the selection of the ownership of the CNDH, but that this designation will be transparent, genuine, open, honest and frank, “knowing that we represent the interests of the Republic”.
He recalled that the Law of the National Human Rights Commission allows those who hold the current position the possibility of re-election, but the law also subjects them to the procedures, deadlines and requirements of the call in terms of consultation, appearance and evaluation. , that is why “I ask that we remain open to this process with high vision.”
Martha Lucía Micher Camarena, legislator from Morena, considered that it is necessary to have a CNDH that does not allow itself to be carried away by political or ideological positions, and that, from the technical side, achieves that people’s rights are respected and guaranteed.
‘Absolute disaster’ management of Piedra Ibarra: Anaya
Senator Ricardo Anaya, from Acción Nacional, pointed out that Rosario Piedra Ibarra has not lived up to the position, since her management was an “absolute disaster” and commented that he “will vote” for the Senate to appoint the best profile, a person with all the credentials, proof of any interference from power, “because a strong Commission with moral authority is needed.”
Ricardo Anaya declared that in the face of the “militarization” of the country, a counterweight is necessary in the CNDH; However, he regretted the re-election of Piedra Ibarra.
“What starts badly ends badly, just look at how it ended. Two advisory councils resigned from him. I trust that even within the Morena bench there are many people aware that the Commission needs to be renewed, it needs to be oxygenated,” said the opposition senator.
Pablo Guillermo Angulo Briceño, from the PRI, expressed that it is essential to take care of the selection process, in which civil society must be involved, to bring the determinations of the call to a better conclusion.
In addition, he asked the legislative majority to seek the necessary consensus that guarantees the best profiles to “authentically address” the human rights of the population.
Alejandra Barrales Magdaleno, from Movimiento Ciudadano, said that it is necessary for the profiles to guarantee that the CNDH will be an autonomous and solid entity, which has the necessary freedom when it comes to caring for people’s rights.
Piedra Ibarra arrived at the CNDH in 2022, however, she has been accused of multiple omissions in different acts that violated the human rights of civilians and migrants, during the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
