Because in Mexico, the average age to start tobacco consumption has dropped to 13 years, the senator of the Green Party, Rocío Corona Nakamura, asked the Ministry of Health to implement forceful measures to stop the marketing of electronic cigarettes to minors. because these devices, known as vapers, are reaching younger people, exposing them to the harmful effects of nicotine and other dangerous chemicals.
The senator stressed the importance of implementing urgent measures to restrict adolescents’ access to electronic cigarettes and electronic nicotine delivery systems. “This exhortation seeks to stop the distribution, sale, donation and supply of these products in semi-fixed stands, street stalls, digital media or any other means of communication,” he commented.
Corona Nakamura said the proposal aligns with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s 43rd commitment to ban the vape trade nationwide.
According to UNAM data, young people between 12 and 15 years of age are the most vulnerable group to smoking. Every year, around 60 thousand people die from diseases related to tobacco consumption, that is, between 165 and 180 deaths daily; while the average age to start smoking has fallen to 13 years.
In addition, electronic cigarettes contain toxins similar to those of tobacco, which harm the health of those who use them and those around them. “It is our responsibility as legislators to ensure that these products do not reach the hands of our young people,” he said.
These data, the senator noted, reveal an alarming public health problem that must be addressed immediately. “Protecting our adolescents from the harmful consequences of tobacco and vaping consumption must be a priority,” he highlighted.
Finally, the Green Party senator stated that proposals like these are necessary to prohibit the sale of these devices to the country’s youngest population, mainly in basic and upper secondary schools.
