Lee: Doncic’s challenge and Lakers, under the spotlights in the NBA
In May 2024, the WNBA announced that it had decided to grant Toronto a Franchise of the Women’s League. The team, the fourteenth of the League, was granted to the company Kilmer Sports Ventures, owned by the Canadian billionaire Larry Tanenbaum, president of the Maple Leaf Sport and Entertainment Administration Board (MLSE).
MLSE controls among other teams the Raptors (NBA), Maple Leafs (NHL, the Professional Ice Hockey League), Toronto FC (MLS, the Professional Soccer League) and Argos (CFL, the Canadian American Professional League of North American Soccer), although Toronto Tempo is not linked to the Canadian sports giant.
According to Canadian media, Kilmer Sports paid 115 million US dollars to get the Toronto Tempo franchise.
