President Claudia Sheinbaum said Tuesday that on May 1 Sergio Salomón, former governor of the State of Puebla, will assume as the new head of the National Institute of Migration (INM), replacing Francisco Garduño, who fought a criminal process for his alleged responsibility in a fire where 40 migrants died.
“Yes, as of May 1, Sergio Salomón enters,” said the president during the town of the town.
The head of the Executive explained that the replacement of Garduño was part of a transition process, since there was a lot of dialogue with the new United States government, and the still holder of the INM “has a lot of relationship with its counterpart in the United States and also, particularly in Guatemala”.
The Relay in the INM occurs after suspending the criminal process that Garduño faced for his alleged responsibility in the fire where 40 migrants died in March 2023 at the Migration Station in Ciudad Juárez.
In addition, migrants and human rights defenders have accused the IM of abuse to avoid the progress of undocumented people to the north of the country before the pressures of the United States, by pressures of Donald Trump to stop the migratory flow to the North American country.
A judge granted in March Garduño the provisional suspension of the criminal process against him for his responsibility in the fire that killed 40 migrants in March 2023, which became final this week after the ruling of a court.
The Government has defended the immigration strategy by mentioning a 75% reduction in the daily encounter of irregular migrants at the US border since December 2023, based on the Office of Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
