The Shani doll, the Mattel African -American doll line launched in the 1990s, will have a real action series that will be carried out by Janine Nabers (‘Swarm’), Variety specialized media reported Wednesday.

According to the US publication, the toy brand has been associated with Amazon MGM Studios to give life to a “family dramatic comedy focused on Shani’s aspirational character.”

The doll line presented exclusively black characters was created by Kitty Black Perkins to counteract the accusations addressed to Mattel for the lack of diversity in his fashion doll lines.

Shani, was born as a sister brand of Barbie, and the original doll series also had two “friends” called Asha and Nichelle. Each had different hair tones and hair textures with the intention of representing the diversity of the black community.

Finally the Shani line was discontinued, and Shani and the associated dolls were included in the Barbie general line.

The news marks a new step in the expansion that Mattel has started from his intellectual property towards cinema and television.

In 2023, the company premiered ‘Barbie’, starring Margot Robbie, a film that meant a milestone on the screen representation of its iconic dolls and raised at the box office of 1,447 million dollars worldwide.

In addition, the company has in development other franchise audiovisual projects such as Polly Pocket or Hot Wheels.
