President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that her government is investigating a possible cyberattack targeting her administration’s legal affairs office, after personal information of government employees was apparently leaked online.

According to the Cybernews portal, the group known as Ransomhub would have published on the “dark web” a sample of files allegedly obtained through hacking. The attackers reportedly demanded a ransom from the government, without specifying the amount, and gave a period of 10 days to prevent 313 gigabytes of information from being disclosed.

These types of attacks, called ransomware, involve unauthorized access to government or corporate systems, blocking sensitive data or threatening its publication if the required payment is not met.

During his morning conference, Sheinbaum noted that he is waiting for a detailed report on the incident: “Just today they are going to give me a report about it,” he declared.

The Ransomhub group claims that the files obtained contain information on government contracts, insurance and financial data managed by the Legal Department of the Presidency, which is in charge of non-criminal legal matters for the federal government.

Among the leaked files would be personal data of government employees, a situation reminiscent of other previous incidents.

In January, the personal information of 263 journalists accredited to cover presidential activities was exposed, apparently due to the misuse of a former employee’s password.
