President Claudia Sheinbaum stated this Wednesday during her morning conference that the National Water Law initiative seeks to guarantee a fairer distribution of the resource, as well as eliminate privileges and stop the hoarding of concessions, according to a report published by Quadratín México.

“It is proposed that all concessions be ordered, when we came to the government we made an agreement so that the liquid that they do not use, that they return it to the National Commission and it can be used where it is most needed,” Sheinbaum explained.

He also added that the modification of the reform proposes stopping the sale and commercialization of water and for the State to maintain control over its management.

“Water can be concessioned from Conagua, but the vision of the neoliberal period is that it can be commercialized, which generated an overexploitation of all bodies of water and aquifers in the country,” he stressed.

Sheinbaum maintained that the Water Law initiative aims to support rural producers “so that water consumption can be more efficient,” although he also warned that there is resistance from some concessionaires.

“Many do not want to return it and there are those who even sell it in the municipalities.”

The president also recalled that since 1992 the idea that water can be treated as a commodity has prevailed, but she emphasized that the Constitution establishes that the resource is the property of the nation.

“In 1992 the vision was that water, like other things, is a commodity with a market, nothing more than the constitution says that the vital liquid is the property of the nation, like oil,” Sheinbaum concluded.
