President Claudia Sheinbaum and the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, agreed this Monday on the good result of the trade agreement they share with the United States, the USMCA.

This coincidence was the result of a bilateral meeting within the framework of the G20 Leaders Summit, as reported by the president in her official X account, while Canadian conservatives have proposed excluding Mexico from the North American free trade agreement.

“We agree on the good result of the USMCA for North America,” reads Sheinbaum’s publication.

Likewise, he expressed that they talked about the “good relationship between our people and governments.”

The meeting with Trudeau adds to the agenda of bilateral meetings that Sheinbaum has held during the summit, aimed at strengthening cooperation with strategic partners.

Previously, Sheinbaum met with the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, with whom he agreed to deepen the “strategic partnership” on issues such as the energy transition, railway development and environmental protection, in line with the global commitment against poverty and climate change.

Sheinbaum also spoke with the president of the United States, Joe Biden, about migration, security and economic issues, in an unscheduled meeting on his agenda and in the midst of a context of political transition in the United States, where the next president could reexamine aspects of the TMEC, which has promoted Mexico as its first trading partner.

The G20 summit, held in Rio de Janeiro under the presidency of Brazil, has allowed Sheinbaum to consolidate Mexico’s active participation in the international forum.

Since her recent assumption of office, the president has sought to reinforce the country’s role in key issues such as economic cooperation, energy transition and sustainability, marking a more proactive foreign strategy compared to her predecessor.

On its agenda, Sheinbuam also plans bilateral meetings with the host presidents of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva; and from South Korea, Yoon Suk-Yeol, as well as with the prime ministers of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer; from India, Narendra Modi; from Japan, Shigeru Ishiba; and from Vietnam, Pham Minh Chinh.
