President Claudia Sheinbaum revealed on Wednesday that in her call with the Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, they agreed that they would always maintain “the commercial agreement always between Canada and Mexico”, despite the tensions caused by the imposition of tariffs by the United States president, Donald Trump.

“With the Prime Minister of Canada we talk about the importance of the treaty and also to maintain the commercial agreement always between Canada and Mexico, which allows us to have the benefits,” said the ruler at her morning conference.

The president highlighted the coincidences he had on Tuesday in her first call with Carney, who told Sheinbaum that Canada will fight “unjustified trade measures” that Trump will announce this Wednesday, and that he is interested in an increase in trade with Mexico.

The president reiterated the importance of maintaining the T-MEC trilateral, in force since July 2020, signed during Trump’s first mandate (2017-2021).

“We agree that it is very important to continue communication with the United States due to the importance of the integration of our three economies, continue strengthening the commercial treaty,” he said.

The call between both leaders occurs before Trump announced this Wednesday, “United States Liberation Day”, tariffs to several countries of the world, including a possible generalized tax of 25% to Mexico and Canada, its main commercial partners.

The current statements of Sheinbaum and Carney contrast with the friction between the government of the former Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, who suggested, like other Canadian politicians, to get Mexico out of the T-MEC and negotiate a bilateral agreement with the United States.
