The presidents of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed this Thursday their intention to continue cooperating for peace and stability in Venezuela and the region, in a telephone conversation in which they “repudiated” the attacks against Venezuelan sovereignty.

“The two leaders expressed interest in continuing to cooperate with Venezuela in favor of peace, dialogue and stability of the country and the region,” said the Brazilian Presidency in a statement in which it reported on the telephone conversation.

Lula also addressed this Thursday the crisis generated by the United States intervention in Venezuela, in which the military captured President Nicolás Maduro and took him to New York, in telephone conversations with the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, and with the prime minister of Canada, Mark Carney.

In the conversation with Sheinbaum, in which they repudiated the attacks against Venezuelan sovereignty, both “rejected any vision that could imply the already overcome division of the world into zones of influence.”

In that sense, the leaders of Brazil and Mexico reiterated the defense of multilateralism, international law and free trade, according to the statement from the Brazilian Presidency.

In the conversation with Petro, the two leaders expressed their “great concern with the use of force against a South American country,” which, they assured, represents a “violation” of international law and Venezuelan sovereignty.

In that sense, they affirmed that the situation in the country “has to be resolved exclusively by peaceful means, (through) negotiation and respect for the will of the Venezuelan people.”

For this reason, the presidents agreed to continue “cooperating” to achieve peace in Venezuela, a country with which both nations share a long border.

Lula and Petro also “welcomed” the announcement made today by the leader of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, to release Venezuelan and foreign political prisoners.

Regarding the conversation with the Prime Minister of Canada, the Brazilian Presidency reported that they also addressed the situation in Venezuela and its implications in the region.

“Both condemned the use of force without protection in the Charter of the United Nations and international law,” the statement said.

According to the note, Lula took advantage of the conversation to highlight that the destiny of Venezuela has to be decided sovereignly by its people and that South America has to continue as a zone of peace.

The two leaders agreed on the need for reform in global governance institutions.
