The Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, agreed this Thursday in a telephone conversation with his counterpart Claudia Sheinbaum in his desire to have “productive relations” with all of America, including the United States, which is now governed by Donald Trump.

“They reaffirmed their purpose of cultivating productive relations with all the countries of the Americas, including the new administration of the United States, in order to maintain peace, strengthen democracy and promote development,” reported the Presidency of Brazil in an official note.

According to the statement, Lula and Sheinbaum, both progressives, also “highlighted the importance of strengthening forums such as the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac),” which excludes the United States and Canada, and “of maintaining regular contact to expand the coordination between Brazil and Mexico.”

The note also highlighted the “excellent moment” of the bilateral relationship, and recalled that Lula invited Sheinbaum to visit Brazil, in order to give “an additional boost” to the ties between both countries.

This Wednesday, Sheinbaum had announced the call with Lula and stated in his daily conference that he had “several calls these days, I spoke with President (Bernardo) Arévalo (of Guatemala), there was a meeting of the foreign ministers of the different countries in America “Latina and the Caribbean.”

The president did not detail the topics she would discuss with Lula, but announced the conversation after receiving questions from the press about Mexico’s communication with Latin America in the face of Donald Trump’s new presidency in the United States.

“I know that sometimes you want there to be a particular declaration, but our fundamental objective is the well-being of the people of Mexico, that is the responsibility of the president, and of course we communicate with all the governments of the world and, particularly, of Latin America,” he responded.
