The president of France, Emmanuel Macron, and his Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheinbaum, agreed this Monday that the two countries should deepen their “strategic partnership” in sectors such as railways and environmental protection.
In a meeting on the sidelines of the G20 in Rio de Janeiro, the first between the highest authorities of both countries in more than six years, both leaders also reaffirmed their intention to cooperate in favor of the equality of women and men with the celebration in 2025 in France of the fourth ministerial conference on “feminist foreign policies”.
“During this first meeting, the two leaders agreed to deepen the strategic partnership between Mexico and France on the energy transition, connectivity, especially rail connectivity, trade and environmental protection,” the French presidency said in a note.
On this last point, The Elysée said that they will strengthen ties with the Latin American country in view of the UN Conference on the Oceans that will be held in Nice in June 2025.

Both Macron and Sheinbaum converged on “the intention to work together” within the framework of the Paris Pact for People and the Planet so that “no country has to choose between the fight against poverty and the preservation of the environment.”
This meeting between the heads of state of France and Mexico occurs after Sheinbaum’s predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, delegated the relationship with the European country to his then Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard.
During his mandate, AMLO had a reduced presence at international summits and barely traveled outside his country, while Macron relegated Latin America to a secondary priority in his first term.
All of this contributed to distancing the dialogue at the highest level between the two countries.
