President Claudia Sheinbaum announced an urgent investment of 21 billion pesos between 2025 and 2027 to strengthen the public health system through the IMSS-Bienestar program, an institution focused on free, universal and quality medical care to the population without social security.

The president reported that her administration identified the need to acquire 3,300 new medical teams, as well as the hiring of a thousand specialist doctors and 1,900 nurses.

This investment will be distributed between 2025 and 2027, although a part will begin to be executed this year, according to the president.

“This means (a necessary investment of) about 21 billion pesos, which we will allocate to the urgent since 2025 and the other part in 2026 and already a last part in 2027. In such a way that the health system of the Welfare INSS will be totally complete,” said Sheinbaum.

The diagnosis presented by his team included an exhaustive review of all health centers and hospitals that are part of the IMSS-Bienestar in 24 states of the country, as well as Mexico City.

Only for the state of Zacatecas, Sheinbaum announced an immediate investment of 621 million pesos (about 31 million dollars) to renew 209 medical teams in 17 hospitals and 29 operating rooms, as well as one thousand100 million pesos (55 million dollars) additional for new hospitals, such as Jalpa General and the replacement of three community hospitals.

“We are going to start buying (the equipment) from this year, from monitors to diverse equipment as linear accelerators for cancer care,” said the president.

The head of the Executive also reaffirmed her commitment to move towards a unique national system, where any citizen can be addressed in the IMSS, the ISSSTE or the IMSS-Bienestar, regardless of their affiliation.

The general director of IMSS-Bienestar, Alejandro Svarch, stressed that this effort represents the greatest investment in public health for people without social security.

He explained that infrastructure will be allocated 17 billion pesos (about 850 million dollars) and in equipment more than 3,300 million (almost 165 million dollars) in the next three years.

In addition, Sheinbaum insisted on the necessary digitalization of the national medical system to facilitate access to clinical files and medications in real time.
