President Claudia Sheinbaum visited those injured by the derailment of a train on the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, in Oaxaca, which left 13 dead and 98 injured, and announced compensation for the victims and their families.

In an interview with the media outside the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social Salina Cruz hospital, Sheinbaum announced financial support of 30,000 pesos for the families of those affected.

“First support will be given to all families so that they do not have to incur expenses,” said Sheinbaum.

The president added that “they are being given funeral support and everything that is required to support the families.”

“And we are going to be in contact with them when the Prosecutor’s Office can determine the cause as soon as possible, additional support will be given to all of them,” he stated.

Sheinbaum specified that the compensation of 30,000 pesos is only “so that they do not have to make expenses in one or two days (…) in this tragic and terrible situation for many of them.”

Previously, Sheinbaum visited the IMSS Bienestar hospitals of Salina Cruz and the Institute of Security and Social Services of Workers of the State of Tehuantepec, where most of the injured are hospitalized.

The president indicated that there are more people who have been transferred to other hospitals in Oaxaca, without specifying how many or which hospitals, and noted that, if necessary, there could be other transfers to Mexico City.

Regarding the complaints of relatives who have reported on networks the lack of hospital and medication, Sheinbaum stated that “they will all be attended to.”

Previously, the Attorney General’s Office reported that it is keeping various proceedings open to clarify the accident.

For its part, the Secretary of the Navy reported that the 13 bodies of the people who lost their lives in the accident have already been fully recovered.

And he specified that “36 people continue to be hospitalized receiving specialized medical care.”

The incident occurred on Sunday in a section of the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, one of the Government’s strategic projects to connect the Pacific and Atlantic oceans through a railway, port and industrial network that crosses the states of Oaxaca and Veracruz.

The Interoceanic Corridor has been presented by the federal Executive as a logistical alternative to the Panama Canal and as a development pole for the south-southeast of the country, although it has also faced challenges related to infrastructure, security and opposition from some communities.

According to Semar, the accident occurred near the Zapotec community Nizanda, on train line Z, between the towns of Nizanda and Chivela, on the Salina Cruz-Coatzacoalcos route, in Oaxaca.

Line Z, inaugurated in 2023, runs from Veracruz to Salina Cruz Oaxaca and is 212 kilometers long.
