President Claudia Sheinbaum reported this Wednesday that in February a delegation of Canadian businessmen will visit the country due to their interest in investing in Mexico, in a context marked by the preparation of the review of the USMCA and trade threats from the United States.

“A very large delegation of businessmen from Canada is coming to Mexico in February with investment interest in our country,” said the president during her morning press conference.

The visit will coincide with the preparation of the T-MEC review, scheduled for the middle of this year and questioned by Washington.

The president affirmed that her government maintains a strategy to promote the arrival of investments to the country and consolidate alliances with different regions of the world, including Canada.

Sheinbaum stressed that the priority is for the review of the T-MEC to be positive for the country and trusted that the trade agreement will be maintained since the integration that Mexico and the United States have, especially, is “difficult to break.”

“That is why we believe, also because it is for the convenience of the United States, that the treaty will be preserved (…) there are some changes, but ultimately the review will be preserved because it is mutually beneficial,” he stated.

Sheinbaum highlights meeting with Mary Simon

Likewise, the president highlighted the activist profile and defense of the rights of indigenous peoples of the Governor General of Canada, Mary Simon, whom she received at the National Palace during an official visit this Tuesday.

“She is a very interesting woman, she is an activist,” he said.

During the meeting, she revealed that both discussed the policies and experiences of each country in this matter.

“So, we were talking about their fight to defend indigenous peoples, we talked about the change we made to the second article of FAISPIAM (Fund for the Well-being of Indigenous and Afro-Mexican People), the programs that we have developed from our intense fight against discrimination, the recognition of indigenous women,” the president explained.

Sheinbaum indicated that the conversation focused on efforts at historical reconciliation and combating discrimination.

The president described the meeting as positive and stressed the affinity in the topics addressed.

“So, we talked a lot about that and she was a very, very interesting woman, really. I was very happy to receive her,” he concluded.
