President Claudia Sheinbaum asked Televisa and TV Azteca this Friday to explain their alleged corruption scandals in the United States that have involved their top managers.

“They would have to explain it, they would have to inform first,” she said when questioned about the topic in her morning conference, which took place this Friday in Baja California Sur.

A journalist asked the president about the controversies that broke out this week regarding the two largest television stations in Mexico, which have a presence in the United States and other countries in America.

Emilio Azcárraga Jean, executive president of the Board of the Televisa Group, the largest media conglomerate in Latin America, requested leave while an investigation is carried out by the United States Department of Justice in relation to the International Federation of Associated Football (FIFA).

The case, initially revealed by Televisa on August 30, involves alleged bribes to FIFA executives to obtain the broadcast rights to the 2018, 2022, 2026 and 2030 World Cups.

Sheinbaum did not talk about this specific case, but he did point out the controversy on TV Azteca about US investment funds that began arbitration against the State within the USMCA before the International Center for Settlement of Disputes (ICSID).

The funds Cyrus Capital Partners and Contrarian Capital Management accuse the Mexican Judiciary of protecting the owner of TV Azteca, Ricardo Salinas Pliego, so that he does not finish paying the 400 million dollars in debt securities that he issued in 2017 and stopped paying in 2021.

Sheinbaum held the Judiciary responsible for this case, although the lawsuit is against the State.

“The private claim is against the Court for having ruled against it or for having granted protection,” he said.
