Given the new case of a baranger worm, Mexico requested “clear indicators” to the United States so that “any pretext” is not taken to close the border for this crisis, President Claudia Sheinbaum said Thursday.
In addition, he explained that the head of the Ministry of Agriculture, Julio Berdegué, remains in dialogue with his counterparts, and Mexico has fulfilled various actions for the reopening of the border such as filters, review by veterinarians, animal washing, among others.
“What do we ask in technical terms? That it is perfectly clear what the indicators are for them to close the border and what are the indicators of animal health,” said the president in the town’s morning.
He explained that for this there is a specialized technical group from both countries to avoid that for a case, as happened in the state of Veracuz, last week, the United States says: “We close the border.”
He added that nothing has to do with a state like Sonora, border with the United States, which is thousands of kilometers away from Veracruz, where an infected animal was found “you cannot continue like this, that because one was found in such a place, then the border is closed.”
“What we are asking for is clear, technical indicators,” he said.
He pointed out that Berdegué has told him “that there is more or less an agreement of these technical indicators” but they still have to review to be a long -term issue, “nothing more than any subject under the pretext of closing the border.”
The other agreement, he said, is that the United States is going to give 30 million dollars to put a fly production that eliminates the boreride worm.

“There is already agreement, it is installed, there is already room and there is only one manufacturer in the world that produces all the equipment. Then it is already in contact and we hope that in the next 10 months or 11 months the plant is installed” although it specified that this does not mean that at that time the border will be opened.
Sheinbaum recalled that when there is an infected copy, they have to spend 28 days to say that a certain area is already free and that is why we work with the United States government, in particular the Ministry of Agriculture.
“To give alternatives to this situation that one day they close and another day no and another day and affect those who dedicate themselves to this and also affect the United States because the price of the meat rises when there is not enough offer,” he said.
He explained that the technical theme is being attended “and we hope that the border will open soon.”
Last week, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) closed for the third time the border to the export of Mexican cattle, after the detection of a new case of cheap cattle worm (NWS) in the state of Veracruz.
The suspension was announced on July 9 by the secretary of the USDA, Brooke L. Rollins, which immediately stopped the flow of Mexican calves towards the US market, one of the main destinations for national livestock.
This is the third closure in just eight months, just three days after its reopening, in which 900 heads of cattle from Mexico were sent to the United States.
