President Claudia Sheinbaum reported this Friday that the riot in a prison in the state of Tabasco is already being investigated, in which the death of 7 inmates was reported, in addition to 10 injured, including four police officers.

“The investigation is being carried out to see if the operation was correct and why weapons were found inside the prison,” Sheinbaum said in his daily conference at the National Palace.

On Thursday night, the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) of Tabasco specified in a statement the account of the riot and highlighted that the violence inside the prison occurred after attempting to transfer two inmates considered to be generators of violence.

“The objective was to transfer two inmates, two people deprived of their liberty, to another prison and when carrying out the operation (the authorities) found weapons in the prison, and this circumstance of confrontation occurred,” Shienbaum explained.

“All the information must be given and if there is any collusion (with authorities) (…) where these situations occur, an investigation must be carried out,” he added.

In its statement, the Prosecutor’s Office stated that the events occurred at the Tabasco Social Reintegration Center (CREST) ​​and the operation was carried out by federal, state and municipal security authorities, who controlled the riot after several hours of fighting.

On Thursday at a conference, the governor of the state of Tabasco, Javier May, assured that “everything was under control” in the Villahermosa prison, where a riot took place at 05:00 local time (11:00 GMT), without giving any information. details on the number of dead and injured.

The Secretary of Security of Tabasco, Víctor Hugo Chávez, explained that at 5:00 local time (11:00 GMT), security forces entered the CREST to carry out the transfer of two prisoners and were attacked with firearms, at the same time that the prisoners began acts of vandalism such as burning various furniture and garbage in the patios of the facility.

In a first report, Chávez did not offer the number of people killed or injured during the operation, and limited himself to detailing the number of weapons seized.

Among the confiscated objects, an AR-15 rifle, five 9 millimeter caliber pistols, a fragmentation grenade, a rifle magazine, three pistol magazines and various ammunition were found.

Previously, the state prosecutor, José Barajas, reported to the media that he was aware of at least two deaths and several injuries.

At the same time as the riot, blockades and fires of at least 10 vehicles and three businesses were reported in different parts of the city of Villahermosa, the state capital.

Tabasco has experienced a significant increase in intentional homicides in 2024, with 715 victims registered from January to October, an increase of 243% compared to the 208 cases reported in the same period of 2023, according to figures from the Executive Secretariat of the National System of Public Security (SESNSP).
