President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned this Monday the armed attack the day before against the former president of Bolivia Evo Morales (2006-2019), who emerged unharmed from an attack on the vehicle in which he was traveling, which received numerous bullet wounds and where his driver was injured in the head.

“Of course we condemn it (the attack). Our solidarity with Evo Morales and we always (make) a call to avoid violence, always,” said the president during her morning press conference.

The leader thus referred to the attack suffered on Sunday by Morales, former Bolivian president and current leader of the ruling Movement towards Socialism (MAS), who reported that the vehicle in which he was traveling received 14 bullet wounds and that its driver was injured in the head.

The day before, Morales accused the president of Bolivia, Luis Arce, of the alleged attack and in September he assured that the (Bolivian) Government had four plans to prevent him from being a presidential candidate, including “killing him.”

Sheinbaum calls for peace

For his part, Arce, who has been away from Morales since 2021 due to a struggle to control the ruling MAS and the Executive, ordered an investigation into the events.

In this regard, Sheinbaum called for “peace” and stated that politics is there to avoid violence.

“Our condemnation of this fact and also our solidarity and always (there must be) the search for peace and non-violence,” he noted.

In statements to Kawsachun Coca radio, Morales reported that his vehicle was followed by two or three others in which the attackers who fired the shots on Sunday morning were traveling in a place located between the towns of Villa Tunari and Lauca Ñ, in the department of Cochabamba, located in the center of the Andean country.

According to the former president’s story, the driver of his car “deviated” from the planned route, but he still did not manage to evade the chase.

“That’s when I realized it was an operation,” said the former president.

This incident occurs two weeks after the blockade of roads by followers of Evo Morales who demand that the Government withdraw the proceedings against their leader, who is accused of human trafficking and statutory rape, in a judicial action that they classify as political persecution.
