President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed Monday that it will be next Friday when she will meet with her counterpart from Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, in what will be her first bilateral meeting.

During his conference at the National Palace, Sheinbaum explained that his meeting on August 15 will include a quick visit to Guatemala, in addition to a trilateral meeting with Belize’s prime minister, Juan Antonio Briceño, in Calakmul, Campeche.

Sheinbaum pointed out that the meeting was proposed by Arévalo in a telephone call held last Friday, in which the Guatemalan president invited her to visit Guatemala.

As he explained, the agenda will begin on Thursday night, when he will travel to Chetumal to head his morning conference on Friday.

Subsequently, he will move to Guatemala for the bilateral encounter with Arévalo, and will return to the Mexican town of Calakmul to receive Belize prime minister, Juan Antonio Briceño, with whom he will hold a trilateral meeting with Arévalo.

Sheinbaum said that during the appointment ‘many agreements’ will be announced

Later, according to Sheinbaum, he will hold a bilateral with the Belizean president.

Sheinbaum said that during the appointment “many agreements” will be made known to the countries of the southern border, although he avoided specifying details “so that they can be the surprise of that day.”

He indicated that in the next few hours he will request the corresponding permit to the Permanent Commission of the Congress to make the official visit.

The approach is part of the regional agenda that both countries have promoted in recent months.

On August 8, Sheinbaum and Arévalo held a telephone conversation to coordinate this first face -to -face meeting, which will have border security, energy, environment and regional cooperation as axes.

In May 2024, Arévalo met in Chiapas with then President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024) to address development and border infrastructure projects, and in June his government increased surveillance actions after an armed confrontation in Quechultenango, Guatemala, on the border with Mexico.
