Mexico City, (EFE) .- President Claudia Sheinbaum congratulated her holiness Leo XIV, after being chosen this Thursday as the new Pope.
“We congratulate his holiness Leo XIV, elected by the Cardinal College as head of the state of the city of the Vatican and spiritual leader of the Catholic Church,” said the president in her social networks.
He also ratified “our humanistic convergence in favor of the peace and prosperity of the world.”
The Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, also greeted the designation of the new Pope.
“From Mexico we greet with respect the designation of Cardinal Robert Prevost as leader of the Catholic Church in the world.”
The official added that the election of the new Pontiff “generates hope her message of peace, her missionary history and her assumption as Leo XIV.”

Prevost, 69, born in Chicago, was elected during the second day of the conclave in which 133 cardinals from all over the world participated.
Leo XIV becomes the 267 Pontiff of the History and Successor of Francisco (2013-2025), who died on April 21 at 88 years of age.
In the conclave for the election of the new Pope, two Mexican cardinals, the archbishop of Guadalajara, Francisco Robles Ortega, and the primacy archbishop of Mexico, Carlos Aguiar Retes participated.
Mexico is the second country with the most Catholics in the world, with about 111 million, only behind Brazil with about 170 million.
