President Claudia Sheinbaum did not rule out this Wednesday the possibility of holding a face-to-face meeting with her American counterpart, Donald Trump, once the official events for the anniversary of her arrival at the White House have passed, on January 20.

“It may be (that we seek a meeting with Trump). Yes, we do not rule it out,” said the president, questioned about whether she would seek an eventual meeting with the president of the United States.

Sheinbaum explained that, for now, he plans to resume contact through a phone call, due to the American president’s agenda.

“Next week marks one year since Donald Trump came to government, on January 20. Well, probably later, (he will look for the meeting). I guess he will be busy at this time. So, probably after the 20th we will be looking for a call to see all the issues,” he said.

Sheinbaum denied that there was a disagreement with the US president, despite some press reports, and assured that the conversation he had last Monday with Trump was cordial.

“He said goodbye very kindly and told me, ‘We’ll call each other soon’. And, in fact, we’ll call each other soon and I would wait for January 20 to pass, as I imagine he has a lot of things to do at the moment,” he said.

He added that, once that date has passed, a face-to-face meeting could be evaluated “to be able, if necessary, in a meeting, to talk about the pending issues we have.”

Regarding whether she would invite Trump to meet with her in Mexico, Sheinbaum avoided offering details.

Both leaders spoke this Monday, after the call, the Mexican president announced that military intervention in Mexico was “ruled out”, as the president had threatened a few days ago when pointing out possible ground attacks on drug trafficking cartels.

The president stressed that both countries maintain a broad agenda of joint work, particularly around the Soccer World Cup that Mexico will organize together with the United States and Canada and that will open in Mexico on June 11.

“Then the World Cup comes in many security issues, for example, that are being discussed with them related to the World Cup for obvious reasons. And other issues that we are working on with them in relation to the World Cup,” he noted.

The possible meeting between Sheinbaum and Trump takes place in a context of intense bilateral agenda, marked by the Soccer World Cup, whose opening match will take place in Mexico City on June 11, and by the review of the trade agreement between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) scheduled for this year.
