President Claudia Sheinbaum defended Tuesday that the proposed increases of taxes in 2026 to sugary drinks, tobacco and violent video games are not a collection measure, but of health and care for social problems.
According to the economic package delivered on Monday night, almost two hours from the legal limit for its presentation, by the Ministry of Finance to the Chamber of Deputies, the Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS) to the flavored drinks will double up to 3.08 pesos (0.16 dollars) per liter, including those with non -caloric sweeteners.
In the case of tobacco, the rate will increase from 160 to 200%, with a gradual increase in the specific quota until 2030 and the incorporation of new products such as “nicotine bags.”
In addition, it raises a special tax of the digital services of violent video games and an increase in the tax at the online betting houses, which will go from 30 to 50%.
“We have been talking here about the damage caused by sugary drinks. It is a non -collection decision, but what has to do with the health of Mexicans,” Sheinbaum said during his morning conference.

Tax rise are to ‘encourage healthier habits’: Sheinbaum
The president added that the resources generated will be allocated to a special fund to attend diseases linked to the consumption of soft drinks and tobacco, such as diabetes and obesity.
In the case of video games, he explained that the tax responds to security concerns and the impact that some violent content may have on girls, boys and adolescents.
“Video games has to do with security issues,” said the president, who clarified that there will be no prohibition, but an information and accompaniment strategy to parents about the use of these platforms.
Sheinbaum stressed that these measures seek to encourage healthier habits and face problems associated with ludopathy, nicotine addiction and excessive sugar consumption, while generating resources for the health system.
