The Armed Forces exhibited their power in the first military parade headed by President Claudia Sheinbaum, in commemoration of the independence of Mexico, where the defense of sovereignty and the fight against corruption was highlighted, in the midst of controversies for criminal accusations within the Mexican Navy and tensions with the United States.
Accompanied by the Secretaries of the Marina (Semar), Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles, and of the National Defense (Defense), Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, Sheinbaum toured the Zocalo in a vehicle, which took it to the presidium where, with artillery savings, they gave honors to the first woman supreme command of the armed forces of the country.
Before the military troops formed in the Zocalo iron, Sheinbaum recalled in his speech that the fight for the independence of the country remains in force with the defense of sovereignty, and that she herself proposed this year a constitutional reform against any foreign intervention.
“The independence, freedom and sovereignty of Mexico means that no foreign power decides for us, but also that each daughter and every child of this land has the right to live with dignity, with justice and freedom,” said Sheinbaum.
He also asked to “not forget” that throughout history “some, as now, have sought support in foreign powers to slander Mexico and ask for interference”; However, he argued that “no interference is possible” thanks to the strength of the Mexican people.
In turn, both secretaries, marine and defense, exalted the pioneer role of Sheinbaum by leading the parade that commemorates the Mexican independence struggle that began in 1810, and reaffirmed their full support towards “sovereignty”, “freedom” and “integrity.”
Morales Ángeles, on the other hand, said that Semar is now “stronger”, after putting “before the law” and the scrutiny of the people of Mexico “reprehensible acts” that, he said, “do not define” the institution.
“It was very hard to accept it, but it would have been much more (hard) and absolutely unforgivable shut it up. Thus, the evil had a determining end. In the navy he found no room or coat. We were ourselves who gave the helm of the helm,” he said.
The head of the SEMAR also argued that “never” were the option neither the “dissimulation” nor the “silence”, and that in the navy there is no place for “evils such as corruption” and impunity, “pass whatever happens” and “hurt to whom it hurts.”
The act occurred in a climate of tension in the Armed Forces, after the recent uncovering of a fuel smuggling network, known in Mexico as ‘Fiscal Huachicol’, with the involvement of senior navy.
The corruption framework is vice -waring Manuel Roberto Farías Laguna, a political nephew of the former Semar, from 2018 to 2024, Rafael Ojeda Durán, close to then President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
At least another nine sailors and customs officials were arrested together with Farías Laguna, at the beginning of September, and days later, the death of two alleged informants of the criminal network was reported, one for suicide, and the other, in an accident in a shooting practice.
This week also Mexican media released the alleged involvement of another high command on the network, Salvador Camargo Vivero, whose name does not appear in the government detainees list.
On the other hand, tensions with the United States persist. On Monday, the US president, Donald Trump, told Mexico as one of the countries with the greatest transit and drug production, despite the efforts of the Mexican government for containing organized crime in the country and delivering criminal leaders to the US.
The arrests of migrants in the United States have also intensified, with violent raids where several Mexicans have died, being the most recent case of Silverio Villegas González, whom a US agent shot him during an arrest.
