President Claudia Sheinbaum said Wednesday that she hopes to achieve an “exit” to the unemployment of the teachers of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE), after the increase in blockages and the threat of mobilizations for judicial elections on Sunday, June 1.

Sheinbaum commented on his daily press conference that the teachers accepted the meeting agreed today with the Ministry of the Interior (Segob), where they will seek to establish “some measures that can continue to help teachers to the extent that the public budget reaches.”

“We are going to wait for today, and hopefully there is an exit to the plant that they have here in the socket,” said the president.

Since May 15, on teacher’s day, the members of the CNTE settled in the Zocalo in front of the Government Palace, waiting to be received by the President to demand that he fulfill his campaign promise to repeal the pension reform of 2007, which accuses that he threatens their labor rights.

Sheinbaum said that “the dialogue is open” and that the agreements that promised all the national teaching are being attended.

“This dialogue door and some demands that are also in the states are being attended. Then, we will wait for today’s dialogue and hopefully it is an exit space,” the president reiterated.

CNTE mobilizations are still planned on June 1

The conflict between Sheinbaum and the CNTE climbed on Monday, when the teachers intensified the blockages in different avenues and buildings of the Mexican capital, including the facilities of the National Electoral Institute (INE).

Sheinbaum then accused the teaching of trying to “boycott” the judicial election of this Sunday, an attitude that compared to that of the “most conservative” who call not to vote this June 1, and acknowledged that the demands of the CNTE would seriously affect public finances.

On May 15, the president announced a 9% salary increase for teachers, retroactive at January 1 and 1% from September, but they considered it insufficient, as they demand a 100% increase, in addition to the repeal of the reforms of 1997 and 2007, as promised during its electoral campaign in 2024.

These protests extended to several states of the country, where possible mobilizations are also planned on June 1, when about 100 million Mexicans are summoned to the polls to renew the Judiciary, after a controversial reform promoted by Sheinbaum.
