President Claudia Sheinbaum outlined that she will attend the draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place on December 5 in Washington, where she would meet her American counterpart, Donald Trump, for the first time in person.
“I think I am going to go. I think so. I would travel on Thursday. Tomorrow we will tell you how it will be,” said the president during her morning press conference, although she announced that it will be a very short trip.
The president pointed out that at the event, which will also be attended by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, she could meet with Trump although “it is not yet defined.”
However, Sheinbaum said that if that were the case “it would be a very brief meeting.”
“So, it is a very short event, but it is a good moment for the two presidents and the prime minister of Canada to be together giving this image that North America and our commercial commitment continues,” emphasized the head of state.
Regarding the event, the president said that her job will be to open the “little ball” of the hype in which the Mexican team will be.
As host countries, Mexico, the United States and Canada have already been assigned the group in which they will be seeded in the draw for next year’s World Cup.
FIFA determined that Mexico will lead Group A, which is also assigned the opening match of the 2026 World Cup next Thursday, June 11, 2026 at the Azteca Stadium. Canada leads Group C, while the United States, which will have the majority of the games in the tournament, will lead Group D.
The draw will be one of the most important events prior to the contest, which Mexico co-organizes and which will have venues in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey.
The ceremony, where the future of the 48 national teams that will participate in the sporting event will be revealed, is scheduled to take place this December 5 and the next day the match schedule and the stadiums in which they will be played will be drawn.
