The visit to Mexico by the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, this Friday will be the first by a European leader since President Claudia Sheinbaum took office in October 2024, and will mark an attempt by both leaders to strengthen economic, commercial and cultural relations between their countries.
“We are going to talk about the economic relationship, the trade agreement that is renewed in 2026 with the European Union and how France will participate, essentially, and collaboration on issues of science, culture and innovation,” the president remarked this Thursday in her daily conference.
The French president will arrive in Mexico from Brazil where he is attending the COP30 meeting of heads of state in the city of Belém.
Sheinbaum explained that Macron’s trip will include a meeting with French and Mexican businessmen, as part of strengthening bilateral economic relations and a joint conference with the French president is planned.

“I think this is going to be a relaunch of our relations with France, which we also warmly welcome. There is a lot to do between the two countries,” said Marcelo Ebrard, Secretary of Economy, this week when commenting on the agenda of the meeting in statements to journalists.
Likewise, the president announced that they will address historical and cultural issues, especially the request for the return of two Mexican codices, the Azacatitlán and the Borbónico, currently in France.
Sheinbaum explained that she will be accompanied by a team made up of the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Economy, Culture, Finance and Science, Technology and Innovation, the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH, as well as the ambassador of Mexico in France, Blanca Jiménez
“Shared values”
Sources from the Elysée in Paris stressed to EFE that what will be the first official visit of a head of state to Mexico since Sheinbaum took office a year ago should serve to strengthen ties with a country with which France “shares many values”, such as the defense of multilateralism, feminist action or the importance it gives to its own sovereignty.
They also insisted that Macron’s willingness to strengthen bilateral economic relations translates into a greater presence of French companies in Mexico, but also into greater attractiveness of France for Mexican investors.
In this regard, they recalled that Mexico is the first Latin American investor in France.
Macron’s visit to Mexico – originally scheduled for last September and delayed due to political tensions in Paris – is part of the preparations for the 200th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mexico and France, which began in 1830.
