Mexico City, (EFE) .- President Claudia Sheinbaum described this Friday as “disrespectful” the statements of the lawyer of the drug dealer Ovidio Guzmán, Jeffrey Lichtman, who called “absurd” the position of the Mexican government for requesting participation in the guilt agreement of Joaquín’s son ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán in the United States.

After his client declared himself guilty in a Chicago Court for four positions, in exchange for collaborating with information on the Sinaloa Cartel, Lichtman accused Mexico of ignoring other figures of the protected drug trafficking.

In response, Sheinbaum said his government does not establish “contubernio relations or complicity with anyone.”

“The lawyer’s statements, first, to say that they are disrespectful of the presidential institution,” said the president at a press conference in Sinaloa.

Litchman also questioned that Mexico would seek to participate in the agreement when the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador “violated a bilateral agreement” with the US when he exonerated General Salvador Cienfuegos, after asking for his extradition while he was investigated for drug trafficking in the US.

Sheinbaum recalled that Guzmán has an arrest warrant in Mexico and was extradited from Mexico to the US in 2023, so his slopes with Mexican justice are reviewing the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).

“It does not correspond to the government but directly to the Prosecutor’s Office,” he said.

Mexican prosecution asks for evidence

The FGR indicated that the judicial process in progress of Ovidio Guzmán, son of ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, was only possible thanks to “the tasks carried out by the Mexican authorities, having obtained the original arrest warrants, and having arrested said individual in national territory, to be extradited”, which demonstrates “the commitment of legality of our country and its authorities”.

Likewise, the Prosecutor’s Office rejected “in an absolute and forceful way” Lichtman’s statements, which labeled “unjust disqualifications expressed irresponsibly, without providing evidence.”

This Friday, Ovid Guzmán avoided going to trial in the US after declaring multipable traffic of multiple drugs (including fentanyl) and participating in organized crime.

Judge Sharon Coleman will set her sentence within six months, and predictably Guzmán will avoid life imprisonment by accessing to collaborate with justice.

However, the US prosecutor indicated that he will ask for a minor penalty than the perpetual if Guzmán meets his cooperation, and requested a fine of 80 million dollars, although Judge Coleman will define both the final sentence and the final amount.
