The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, met on Wednesday with the American State Secretary, Christopher Landau, with whom she talked about “various themes” of the bilateral relationship in the midst of the tensions generated by the migratory raids in the United States that have caused a wave of protests, especially in Los Angeles.

“We met in the National Palace with Christopher Landau, Undersecretary of State, to talk about various issues of the United Mexico-United States,” said the president in her X account without giving more details about the meeting.

The meeting between Sheinbaum and Landau, which lasted approximately two hours, occurs in the midst of tension between Mexico and the United States due to the recent accusations of the US Secretary of National Security, Kristi Noem, who accused her of inciting protests in Los Angeles, a city with the largest Mexican community abroad.

This morning, during her morning press conference, the Mexican president said that “we have never called a violent mobilization, never in our entire lives,” in response to Noem’s accusations.

In addition, the meeting is given in full negotiations for the imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminum by the United States, in which Mexico has sought to be exempt from these taxes.

Although Sheinbaum did not detail the issues he would seek to address with Landau, he said that among them he would be to specify the next visit of the US Secretary of the United States Rubio; as well as talking about the possible meeting with President Donald Trump at the next G-7 meeting in Canada next week, which Mexico goes as a guest.

The “number two” of American diplomacy is in a work tour between June 10 and 13 in which, in addition to Mexico, it will visit El Salvador and Guatemala.

According to the official note of the State Department, Landau, who was ambassador to Mexico between 2019 and 2021, will hold conversations to promote economic growth through the private sector, promote commercial investments in the United States in the region and underline the importance of eradicating illegal migration.
