President Claudia Sheinbaum recognized this Monday that the main problem currently facing the country is related to public security and its direct connection with criminal groups and organized crime.

Sheinbaum explained in his usual press conference that, since the beginning of his Government in October 2024, it was determined that public security represents the greatest national challenge, particularly due to the presence and operation of criminal organizations that affect daily life, the local economy and the tranquility of various regions of the country.

“We consider that the main problem today in our country has to do with public security linked to criminal groups or organized crime,” said the president.

In this context, Sheinbaum recalled that his Government granted new powers to the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection to carry out investigation and intelligence work focused on public security, differentiating them from the tasks of national security and internal security that have historically fallen to other institutions.

He explained that these actions seek to strengthen coordination between the National Intelligence Center, the National Guard, the Secretariat of National Defense and the Secretariat of the Navy, with the objective of building a single intelligence and investigation system that allows more effectively combat organized crime.

Sheinbaum insisted that the security strategy is not limited to the use of force, but is complemented by social policies, welfare programs and actions to address the causes of violence, especially in communities with high levels of marginalization.

Likewise, he reiterated that his Government will maintain the reduction of violence and the strengthening of public security as a priority, considering that guaranteeing peace is an indispensable condition for economic development, social justice and the well-being of the population.

In the first 14 months of Sheinbaum’s mandate, 38,700 people have been arrested for high-impact crimes, more than 311 tons of drugs have been seized and homicides fell by 37%, according to the latest figures from the Security Cabinet.
