President Claudia Sheinbaum insisted on Wednesday that “never” called violent mobilizations and assured that her statements were taken out of context, in response to the accusations of the Secretary of National Security of the United States, Kristi Noem, who accused her of inciting protests in Los Angeles.

“We have never called a violent mobilization, never in our life,” said the president during her morning press conference.

Noem, during a press appearance on Tuesday in the Oval Office with President Donald Trump, said that the Mexican president “encouraged more protests” in Los Angeles for the migratory raids made in recent days by the US authorities.

Sheinbaum said that he only advocated the defense of Mexicans, while regretting that his statements were taken from context.

“From there they are resumed (the statements) by some other people in the United States. Yesterday when the Secretary of Internal Security made this statement, because we immediately said: ‘It is absolutely false.’ Totally false, we have never called on actions in Los Angeles,” he emphasized.

Sheinbaum said that in his speech he called on the peaceful mobilization which had to do with the 3.5% tax on the remittances proposed in the United States.

“They want to confuse from a statement of three weeks ago that has to do with taxes to remittances, which was also never summoned (to violence), never, because we do not believe in it, nothing violent or caused with what happened on Sunday in Los Angeles,” he settled.

Sheinbaum will address the issue of protests with Undersecretary of State of the US

The controversy coincides with the visit of the Undersecretary of State, Christopher Landau, who will meet with the president in the National Palace this morning and with whom, he said, will address the issue.

“We are always going to defend Mexicans (…) we must always act responsible, with a cold head in the relationship in everything, but in particular in the relationship with the United States,” he said.

In that sense, he said that Mexico has to always seek a good relationship with the United States, because they not only share more than 3,000 kilometers of border, but also their economies are very integrated.

“That does not mean that we subordinate. That does not mean that we are not firm in the defense of our sovereignty and the defense of Mexicans here and in the United States. That does not mean that there is subordination. What we are looking for is always a relationship as the same,” he said.

Therefore, he reiterated, it is important to avoid any misunderstanding and advance in the relationship “always defending the people of Mexico, our sovereignty and looking for the best possible relationship.”

Since Sunday, the president said that “it is not with raids or violently” as the immigration issue can be resolved and this Tuesday requested a “comprehensive immigration reform” that recognizes the role of Mexicans living in the United States.

The recent operations carried out by the Customs Immigration and Control Service (ICE) in cities in the United States, particularly in Los Angeles, which have resulted in the arrest of dozens of migrants, including at least 61 Mexicans.
