President Claudia Sheinbaum denied this Friday that she has made a secret agreement with her counterpart, Donald Trump, to achieve the postponement of 25% tariffs to Mexican products.
“I promised not to lie, not steal and not betray the people. We do not lie. It is not that there is a negotiation in the dark with the United States, no, ”said the president during her morning press conference.
Sheinbaum emphasized that during the talk he held on Thursday with the US president, the arguments to avoid tariffs were the results that his administration has had on security issues.
“And not only so that Fentanilo does not reach the United States, but because we have a responsibility with the people of Mexico to achieve peace and security, which has to do with justice,” he said.
On Thursday, Mexico and the United States reached a new agreement to postpone the imposition of 25% of tariffs on Mexican products for another month, so this measure could enter into force on April 2.

Sheinbaum insisted that he will continue working and collaborating with the US
This morning, Sheinbaum insisted that he will continue working and collaborating with the United States, within the framework of the agreement that was achieved last week when various members of his cabinet met with US officials to address issues such as security and drug trafficking.
Questioned about whether the United States is a reliable partner, after Trump’s threats regarding tariffs, the president evaded the answer and exalted the agreement achieved, which, he said, was “very respectful.”
“Of course that generates trust. But here is a matter of what we do every day. Every day. In development cooperation with respect to our sovereignty, ”he emphasized.
Likewise, that with the United States there is a commercial treaty that allows Mexican products not to face tariffs due to the principle of reciprocity.
“If we do not put taxes to what comes from the United States, because the United States will not put taxes for what comes from Mexico because it is reciprocity,” he said.
In addition, he said that the treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) will remain in force and its review is expected by 2026.
