Mexico will announce measures next week if an agreement with the United States is not reached on the tariffs to steel and aluminum announced, President Claudia Sheinbaum said Wednesday.
He also described as an “unfair measure” the announcement of the United States to raise tariffs to metals from 25% to 50% introduced in March, during their morning conference, citing the free trade agreement that Mexico and Canada share with the United States.
Sheinbaum, however, said that Mexico’s response would not be “eye for an eye.”
“It’s not about revenge, or reprisals, as they say in English,” he said. “It’s about protecting our jobs and business.”
The president of the United States, Donald Trump, signed an executive proclamation on Tuesday night that activates tariffs starting Wednesday.
The Trump administration also wants countries to present their “best offers” to prevent other import taxes from entering into force in early July, according to a letter draft to the negotiating partners seen by Reuters.
The Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, plans to hold conversations with high -level American officials this week, said Sheinbaum.
