President Claudia Sheinbaum said that her American counterpart Donald Trump told her to return to Washington for another meeting, after the first one they held this Friday.
“We talked about many issues and we agreed to continue working. The good thing is that it was a very cordial meeting and I am leaving very positive,” he told the press about the three-way meeting he had with Trump and the Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, after the draw for the 2026 World Cup, held in Washington.
Sheinbaum said that during the meeting, which lasted an hour, they did not talk about the review of the USMCA, an agreement that Trump intends to let expire, but he assured that they will “continue working.”
According to the president, Trump considers that Mexico “is a great, extraordinary country,” and revealed that he invited her to return to the American capital.
“Yes, he also invited me to come to Washington again, and we will agree on a date,” he said.
The president offered these statements at the end of a meeting with the Mexican community in the United States, which took place at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington after the draw.
Find out: First meeting with Trump was ‘very good’: Sheinbaum
Sheinbaum, on her first trip to the US capital since she became president, was received at the door of the institute by people with flags and banners, as well as a mariachi music group.
On social media, Sheinbaum stated that the meeting with Trump and Carney was “excellent” and that it represented a “great opportunity that the 2026 Soccer World Cup offers for the three countries and for the good relationship between them.”
“We agreed to continue working together on commercial issues with our teams,” he added. The meeting occurs after Trump indicated on Wednesday that he will possibly let the USMCA, a free trade agreement with Mexico and Canada that must be reviewed in 2026, expire, and that he will seek a new trade agreement with his neighbors.
The Republican declared that Mexico and Canada “have taken advantage” of the United States economically.
Upon his arrival at the drawing ceremony this Friday, Trump however stated that he gets along “very well” with Sheinbaum and Carney.
