President Claudia Sheinbaum indicated this Wednesday that she seeks to demonstrate to the next US president, Donald Trump, the contribution that migrants and Mexican trade make to the United States economy, in the face of warnings of tariffs and deportations.

“These numbers are fundamental for the review that will be carried out in 2026 of the (trade) treaty, but also for any point that the United States Government is going to make, the most important thing is to demonstrate with information the benefits for the United States. of the work of our brothers and sisters there,” he declared.

The Mexican president responded in her morning conference to questions from the press about how Mexico will respond to Trump’s tariffs, who takes office on January 20 after a campaign in which he warned of taxes on all Mexican imports, including al minus 100% to cars.

Sheinbaum avoided answering whether there will be reciprocal tariffs, but insisted that he seeks to meet with Trump’s team to demonstrate the benefits of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) and the contribution of Mexicans in that country, which amounts to 338,000 million dollars, according to the Government.

“We are going to defend Mexico and the most important thing is that, the moment we have the opportunity to meet, whether with President Trump’s transition team or once he takes the presidency, (there is) this high-level dialogue where “You can see what Mexico has done on issues of fentanyl, migration and economic issues,” he mentioned.

In the country, there is concern about Trump’s promises of mass deportations from the United States, where Mexicans are close to half of the 11 million undocumented immigrants and their remittances represent almost 4% of Mexico’s gross domestic product (GDP), which this year would have an estimated record of 65,000 million dollars.

The president assured that her Government is “doing very important work on how much Mexicans contribute” to the United States, “including for (each) state of the American Union, in how much they benefit the economy.”

“The same goes for how much the treaty benefits the United States economy, that is, the T-MEC benefits Mexico, but it benefits the United States a lot. So what would a tariff mean for the US economy? We are very advanced in this work,” he indicated.
