President Claudia Sheinbaum so far ruled out damage to the country for the magnitude 8.8 earthquake that hit the Russian Peninsula of Kamchatka on Tuesday, although she warned of the increase in sea level on the coast of the Pacific.

“So far there is no damage,” said the president during her morning press conference.

Sheinbaum added that the greatest risk could appear on Wednesday morning “and that sea level can increase in certain areas of the Pacific, but in reality the alert was made, but did not generate large risks.”

Earlier, the Tsunamis (CAT) alert center of the Marine Secretariat (Semar) issued an alert bulletin to update the sea level variations in different parts of the Mexican Pacific coast.

In the notice, the SEMAR indicated the variations on the Mexican coast of the Pacific Ocean such as Ensenada (Baja California), with a registered height of 0.70 meters at 6:15 am (12:15 GMT); Salina Cruz (Oaxaca), with 0.25 meters at 6:14 am (12:14 GMT), as well as Isla Clarion, with 0.25 meters at 6:20 hours (12:20 GMT) and Manzanillo, with 1.15 meters at 6:15 am (12:15 GMT), both in the state of Colima.

The SEMAR also recommended keeping the population away from “the beaches and coastal areas”, since “strong and unusual currents are expected in port accesses” and gave notice that the “alert remains active until new notice.”

Tsunami’s alert occurred after an earthquake that occurred at 23:25 GMT on Tuesday off the southern coast of the Russian Peninsula of Kamchatka, on the other side of the Pacific Ocean, with a magnitude of 8.8.

As estimated by the United States Geological Service (USGS), the earthquake occurred about 18.2 kilometers deep in the seabed.
