President Claudia Sheinbaum voted this Sunday in the first elections of the Judiciary in Mexico in the box located next to the National Palace.
Sheinbaum left the National Palace at 9:26 am next to her husband Jesús María Tarriba to go to the box of Section 4748, which was located on Currency Street.
Sheinbaum raised his fist and shouted “Long live democracy!”
During the week, the president informed that after casting her vote she would move to Acapulco, Guerrero, to lead the events for the National Navy Day.
Mexico will choose for the first time in its history, by popular vote, to 881 positions of between 3,422 candidates, of the Judiciary, both at the federal and local level, between judges and magistrates.
The elections are consequence of the constitutional reform promoted by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), approved in September 2024 that, among other things, will reduce the number of ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), from 11 to 9 and create the Court of Judicial Discipline.
The process, promoted by Morena, contemplates that the positions of judges, magistrates and ministers of the Supreme Court are defined by popular vote, between 881 federal judicial positions, which has been questioned by academic sectors, international organizations and judicial associations.
