The economic relationship between the United States and Mexico will go through a “turbulent phase” due to the review of the Free Trade Agreement (TMEC), but North America will emerge strengthened as the region with “the greatest potential in the world,” said Carlos Slim Domit, president of the board of directors of Grupo Carso and América Móvil.

“There will be a turbulent phase, with the review of the USMCA. But we are very optimistic about the economic future of North America,” he said at the Milken Institute global investor conference held in Mexico City.

A week ago, the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, had indicated before the Senate plenary session that the USMCA was going to “survive” after the review scheduled for 2026, despite threats from US President Donald Trump, who has postponed the application of tariffs to Mexico on several occasions.

“North America in this reconfiguration of the current world is the region with the greatest potential. The potential of the sum will allow it to compete and stabilize supply chains,” remarked the son of Carlos Slim Helú, who has one of the largest fortunes in the world.

The businessman highlighted that although the United States “lost technological leadership for a while,” he assured that “now it seems that it is recovering it with Artificial Intelligence,” something very important to take advantage of the complementarity between Mexico and its northern neighbor.

“The path ahead is very positive,” added Slim, who heads a business conglomerate with interests in sectors such as infrastructure, telecommunications or energy.

The Milken Institute’s global investor conference analyzes current economic challenges with the presence of various regional political and economic leaders, such as Ebrard; former Canadian International Trade Minister Mary Ng; the Mexican ambassador to the United States, Esteban Moctezuma, and the president of BanCoppel, Ruben Coppel, among others.
