For the emblematic velvety Colombian band, creating songs about aging may not be the most popular, but it is a genuine act of rebellion.
“Part of our rebellion is also to express what is happening to us in life. Then make songs about becoming old, because it may not be the most popular, but it is a rebellion, ”Mexico Andrea Echeverri tells Forbes about the return of the band to the Vive Latino festival.
“It’s like saying: I am becoming old and I will not avoid it and because here I am, with my Cana and with my wrinkle and that’s fine. That feeds our songs and our songs, so it seems to me that we are old rebels, ”he adds with a laugh.
The novelty group singer states that the velvety rock is still rebellious.
“Aterciopelados has always maintained an essence and some messages and some struggles, but always listening to new music and taking little things that interest us and experiencing a lot,” he shares.
Lee: Vive Latino will celebrate its 25th anniversary
And that is what the group offers in rebel genes, the new album that will be released next month and with which it questions stereotypes related to beauty or that uses humor to make fun of ageism.
“It has a lot of humor and a lot of mocking myself. It’s not like saying: ‘Ah, I am the one that I am perfect and all the others are wrong.’ I show all the things that I am missing, say, to do as this thing of the show Business, the woman, the diva, ”says Echeverri.
Aterciopelados returns to Vive Latino
With four Latin Grammy awards in his career, the group will be presented again at the Vive Latino Rock Festival, which celebrates its 25th anniversary.
The group was in the first edition of 1998, and after 10 years since the last participation, velvety will now return with Rubén Albarrán, a member of Café Tacvba, as a special guest.
“The Vive Latino festival for us was very important because it was those times when that movement of Spanish rock was in all its splendor, and the festival is like rock to the park in Colombia,” says Héctor Buitrago.
The other foundation of the band indicates that they have learned to enjoy other genres and groups, which has nurtured their musical proposal and update the arrangements of their songs.
“For us it is very cool because we really did not come, so it is a reunion with that audience. I imagine that a lot of younger public will arrive. Then it will also be the first time that many of them are going to see us, ”he says.
The band emphasizes that it has been very active with presentations and new materials, and that even the confinement for the COVID stopped them, because during that period he released an album.
“In fact in the pandemic I also made a lot of ceramics. I am Ceramist Yya from that we made a superbon project called Calvarios ovaries, which was like for the victims of sexual violence, it was a song of sorority. That was super nice, ”says Echeverri.
Aterciopelados will perform on Sunday at the Amazon Music stage at 4:40 p.m. and for 40 minutes will offer its fans a sound trip with the most representative pieces of their rebellion.
