Sony is officially bringing back the Charlie’s Angels franchise, 7 years after the franchise’s controversial revival.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is moving forward with another reboot of Charlie’s Angels. The feature film will be written by Pete Chiarelli, who was responsible for penning The Proposal (2009) and Crazy Rich Asians (2018).
Details on who or which companies would produce the new Charlie’s Angels project are unknown at the time of this article’s publication. However, an insider claimed that Drew Barrymore would be a producer under her Flower Films banner, although this is unconfirmed.
The original Charlie’s Angels was actually a TV show and ran from 1976 to 1981. The popular drama series featured Farrah Fawcett (Jill Munroe), Kate Jackson (Sabrina Duncan), and Jaclyn Smith (Kelly Garrett) in the main roles. It was produced by Aaron Spelling and followed the story of three female investigators who are employed by the Townsend Agency, which was owned by Charlie Townsend, whose face was never shown.
The franchise was first rebooted in 2000 when Sony’s subsidiary, Columbia, theatrically released a film starring Barrymore (Dylan Sanders), Cameron Diaz (Natalie Cook), and Lucy Liu (Alex Munday). The movie earned $264.1 million worldwide, which would be equivalent to roughly $493 million in the modern day. The success of the film paved the way for a sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, in 2003.
Another Charlie’s Angels TV show aired in 2011. However, the revival flopped and got pulled after the first seven episodes. Sony also made another film in 2019. It had a star-studded cast, featuring Kristen Stewart (Sabrina Wilson), Naomi Scott (Elena Houghlin), and Ella Balinska (Jane Kano), and was directed by Elizabeth Banks, who also played Bosley. That adaptation wasn’t well-received and was considered a commercial failure, performing very poorly at the box office.
Development for the upcoming Charlie’s Angels reboot has just begun, so next to nothing is known about the project. The Hollywood Reporter also stated that Sony would not comment on the film.
There is currently no release date for the new Charlie’s Angels.
