With the government of Claudia Sheinbau, Mexico is resuming a strong push towards renewable energies and the energy transition, and with the arrival of Donald Trump to the presidency in the United States, the opportunities may be greater because the American Union seeks to replace China, which is its great supplier, assured Paolo Salerno, Managing Partner of the Salerno y Asociados firm.
“The good news is that public policy has changed and is directed towards new projects; Obviously, at this moment we still have to wait for the whole part of the new rules, but it really seems that there is a change of direction, it is on paper, it is in the plan (Mexico), which are the most important documents that we have today ”, he noted.
In an interview with Forbes Mexico, he indicated that in the first 100 days of the administration, the Ministry of Energy has mentioned what is going to be done and that is positive, because unlike the previous six-year term where there was stagnation in progress towards decarbonization , an opening of the energy sector is projected, although controlled and regulated, but both public and private investments are already planned.
The specialist explained that although the interest in carrying out new projects depends a lot on the legal framework that is presented, he does envision a Mexico that is moving towards the energy transition, which means support for renewables, change in the energy matrix, efficiency practices, use more rational use of water, among others.
He specified that, for example, generation projects from conception to implementation take between two and three years, while energy efficiency projects need between one and two years, so it is important to wait for the results of the reform.
“I believe that the first semester of this year or the first quarter, without a doubt, will be dedicated only to analyzing and seeing how the reform is going to work; As a result of this, all investments will begin to be made. For the results, it takes a year and a half or two, at least, to see important results,” said Paolo Salerno.
When questioned about a scenario in which Donald Trump’s administration materializes its protectionist rhetoric and whether this could stop investments in Mexican companies for the use of clean energy, he assured that no, it is the opposite, since Mexico is the main partner of United States, but it is also a partner of other countries, such as those in Europe and Asia.
“It’s not just the United States, it’s mainly the United States, but it’s not just him. And the issue of the new president in the United States should benefit Mexico in the sense that the growth of the local industry will be sought. With talks more focused on sustainability, but not only environmental, but also economic. That would allow, without a doubt, a growth of the Mexican industry,” said the firm’s specialist.
“I see it very well and I see that it can bring, literally, many many benefits in favor of the country, obviously, playing with the same rules, but I believe that the Mexican industry is going to grow a lot in the coming years, above all, because there is this situation in which China is a strong supplier, from there we will see how Mexico is going to do to replace this country,” he added.
