Stardew Valley’s Most Hated Character Getting A New Shot At Redemption

Stardew Valley got a huge new announcement yesterday, with ConcernedApe’s official big reveal of the new marriage candidates. You’ll be able to romance both Clint and Sandy once Stardew Valley patch 1.7 eventually releases, which may be a while yet. The reveal has landed controversially among some players, however.

A large portion of Stardew Valley fans largely agree that Clint is hands-down the absolute worst character in the game, so much so that they started a spirited hate group for Clint on Reddit. While Clint haters have plenty of reasons to dislike the ill-tempered blacksmith, some fans such as Born-Crab-3969 think the new 1.7 update could be his shot at a true “redemption arc.”

Stardew Valley’s New Marriage Candidate Is A Controversial Pick

Anticipation has been building over the past weeks as fans awaited the official reveal of Stardew Valley‘s new marriage candidates, a new addition to the upcoming 1.7 patch that developer ConcernedApe teased last year. In an announcement video posted for Stardew‘s anniversary celebration, ConcernedApe revealed Clint and Sandy as the new marriage candidates.

The news came as a bit of a shock to many players who were hoping against hope that they’d finally be able to romance the Wizard or even male characters like Gus or Willy, the beloved fisherman. There’s a general agreement among many players that Clint is one of the worst and “most cringe characters” of the lot.

While it’s up for debate, there’s a laundry list of reasons that fans dislike Clint, and the character is so loathed that he’s inspired his own hate groups online. That said, players think this might be ConcernedApe’s way of giving Clint a shot at redemption, giving the character new or reworked dialogue that doesn’t draw so much ire among fans.

As strawberryosamu puts it, “Hopefully he’ll have dialogue changes and be less creepy and weird,” while PronouncedEye-gore is looking for the silver linings: “Now you can break his heart and THEN marry Emily. This doesn’t have to be a L.”

Now that Clint is on the table in terms of romance options in Stardew, fans are curious if his new dialogue will be able to make up for how insufferable he is in the current build of the game. Fans had their hopes up really high for a possible Wizard romance, so whatever happens in 1.7 with Clint and Sandy has pretty big expectations to meet.

That said, it’s an exciting time to be a Stardew Valley fan, and the level of passion fans have for these characters after ten years since the game’s release is a testament to its posterity and universal appeal. No matter your feelings about Clint, it’s amazing that we’re still getting entirely new reasons to start a new playthrough after all this time.
