James Van Der Beek lost his ongoing battle with cancer this week. Friends of his family started a GoFundMe to help with costs, and even legendary Hollywood director Steven Spielberg has reportedly donated.
At the time of writing, the GoFundMe campaign has raised $2,120,352 for Van Der Beek’s family. Per the donations list, an account named ‘Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw’ donated $25,000 on February 12. Van Der Beek was a veteran actor on multiple series, though he is best known for his iconic role in Dawson’s Creek. In the show, the late actor played Dawson Leery, who idolized Steven Spielberg as he was an aspiring filmmaker.
According to People, Wicked director Jonathan M Chu also donated $10,000 to the fundraiser. The outlet notes that the GoFundMe campaign had a $250,000 target. According to the fundraiser, Van Der Beek is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children. The family reportedly suffered “significant financial strain” while supporting James and providing for his care.
“In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future. The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds,” the post reads. “They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time.”
One update on the platform from February 12 thanks donors for their support. “Your kindness has meant more than we can put into words. In the middle of deep grief, your support has been a light,” the update reads. “Right now, the family is taking time to mourn and be with one another.”
The post concludes, “Please continue to keep James’s wife and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you for honoring his life with compassion, generosity, and love.”
James Van Der Beek revealed his diagnosis of colorectal cancer in 2024 after a diagnosis in 2023. The financial strain was reportedly taking its toll toward the end of 2025. Multiple outlets, including The Guardian, revealed that the family was auctioning off memorabilia and ‘treasures’ to pay for treatment.
The actor reportedly said, “I’ve been storing these treasures for years, waiting for the right time to do something with them, and with all of the recent unexpected twists and turns life has presented recently, it’s clear that the time is now.” The collection reportedly included an outfit from the Dawson’s Creek pilot episode and a hat from the 1999 movie Varsity Blues.
