Alcohol consumption can lead to the greatest risk of pancreatic cancer, disease with higher mortality rates, according to a study published Monday by the International Agency on Cancer Research (IARC), part of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Although alcohol consumption had already been related to the increase in cases of cancer in general, direct links had not yet been found with the pancreatic, but the new research concludes that each increase of 10 grams a day in alcohol consumption increases the risk of this disease by 3%.

More specifically, in men, a consumption of between 15 and 30 grams of alcohol (equivalent this last amount to two glasses) can increase the risk of this type of cancer by 15%, and above those amounts you can shoot at 36%.

In women a consumption of between 15 and 30 grams of alcohol daily increased the risk by 12%, IARC said in a statement.

“Alcohol is often consumed next to tobacco, which raised doubts about whether the smoking habit could confuse the results, but our analysis shows that the link between alcohol and pancreas cancer also exists between non -smokers,” said Dr. Pietro Ferrari, head of the IARC Nutrition and Metabolism Office and main responsible for the study.

In the investigation, published in the specialized magazine “PLOS Medicine”, 2.5 million people from four continents participated.

Although pancreatic cancer is only the most frequent twelfth at the global level, it is responsible for one in 20 cancer deaths, due to factors such as its late diagnostic, and mortality rates have not achieved for now being reduced with the improvements in treatments.

“Although there are well -known risk factors, such as tobacco consumption, excess body fat, chronic pancreatitis or diabetes, the causes of this cancer are still little known, so this study helps expand knowledge,” Ferrari said.
