Mexico City.- One in four women aged 15 to 19 who have had a partner has suffered violence in courtship in Mexico, according to a study presented Tuesday by Mexican civil organizations First and Fundación Naná.

The report ‘Violence in courtship from the school perspective’ also warns that violence in the couple intensifies with age, affecting seven out of 10 Mexican women in all age ranges.

It also warns that 11.5% of girls and adolescents victims of femicide were under 17 years.

The president of the Naná Foundation, Ximena Céspedes, recalled that her daughter, Ana María Serrano Céspedes, was a victim of femicide at age 18 by her ex -boyfriend, in September 2023, a case that serves as a starting point of the study.

The report also explains the three cyclic phases of violence in courtship so that students have elements to identify it.

The first phase is called tension, that is, when the couple gets angry or irritated; The second, is the explosion, when it exercises violence, and the third, is the honeymoon, when it is repentant, asks for forgiveness and promises to “change.”

In addition, the document includes the support tool ‘The red flags in your relationship’, which contains didactic suggestions to address from the classroom to detect risk behaviors in emotional relationships.

The objective of the study is to raise awareness among the educational community so that it can identify and act before the first signs of violence in relationships so that no other young woman is a victim of femicide, Céspedes said.

Patricia Vázquez, executive president of Mexicans first, highlighted the urgency of detecting and preventing violence in school environments, in a country with an average of more than 10 women killed per day.

“Students need tools that help them detect violence in their personal relationships. The responsible authorities and figures must guarantee support networks and care mechanisms with an absolute perspective of human rights, ”he said.

The study also showed that 32% of 15 -year -old women have suffered some violence during their school career.

The study is not a survey, but a review of official data from different dependencies, both of INEGI, as of SEP sector programs.
