A study led by the University Rovira I Virgili (URV) of Tarragona (Northeast) determines that men with telomeres – structure located at the end of the chromosomes that protect the long DNA have a better sperm quality, the Spanish academic center reported on Wednesday.

The researchers analyzed biological signs of sperm and leukocytes provided by 200 healthy and reproductive age, between 18 and 40 years, participants in the International Led-Fertyl project, designed to evaluate how it affects diet and lifestyle in sperm quality.

The analysis revealed that participants with a greater telomeric length had more sperm and higher concentrations of these male gametes.

“These results suggest that the length of telomeres could be a useful biomarker to determine the quality of the sperm and, in the long run, infertility,” explained María Fernández de la Puente, researcher of the Food, Nutrition, Development and Mental Health Group of the URV and the first signatory of this research.

However, it has stressed that we must continue studying to confirm this long -term relationship: “Research such as this helps to understand the mechanisms behind infertility and to establish strategies to improve the reproductive quality of people.”

According to researchers, fertility has decreased “drastically” in recent years. In fact, the estimated population proportion with fertility problems reached 17.5% in 2020, according to the World Health Organization.

“Due to the impact that infertility has on the mental health and quality of life of people, identifying reproductive health indicators is a priority issue for the scientific community, and one of these indicators could be telomeres,” said the authors of this study.
