Claudia Fernández González, Executive President of the National Chamber of the Sugar and Alcohol Industry (CNIAA), said she is in favor of the customs law promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum, because she closes the key to a smuggling of sugar from Guatemala and Brazil valued in more than 25 million pesos.

“So far from 2025 more than 350 thousand tons of sugar have entered through technical smuggling, which caused a price drop,” said the businesswoman.

He said that sugar smuggling has caused a loss of 25 billion pesos for the sector and for Mexico’s sugarcane producers represents an income less than 15 thousand MDP.

He indicated that sugarcane agribusiness generates half a million jobs, benefits more than 2 million 400 thousand people in Mexico and operate more than 46 mills distributed in 15 entities.

Every year there are more than 5 million tons of sugar, but “unfortunately in recent years there has been a significant increase in bronch and technical contraband imports.”

“The technical smuggling is done under the allowed legal tools, since the law is not clear and the importers use it in an excessive way,” he said.

“Today is not reflected directly in jobs because we depend on a law contract,” he said.

“The damage is noted in the communities, since where there is an ingenuity is a focus of regional development for all the people who live around,” he said.

Families living in sugarcane have a lower income from sugar cane smuggling, he pointed out.

“Broco smuggling enters through southern Mexico and technician, which have been 350 thousand tons of sugar affects the sugar industry,” he recalled.

He supported the modifications of the customs law because he controls, gives certainty and closes the keys that have allowed the entry of smuggling sugar.

“In the case of Asia sugar it is not a competitor, but comes from the great producers of the sweetener like Brazil and Guatemala,” he said.

“That is why there is importation from Guatemala in a anger way, that is, crosses Burrito and there is use of specialized transport,” he added.
