Taylor Sheridan’s Mayor of Kingstown continues to take the world by storm after being canceled and prior to its Netflix debut.
Sheridan is the co-creator, an executive producer, and a writer for the popular crime thriller series on Paramount+. It stars Jeremy Renner as Mike McLusky, who becomes the “Mayor” of the titular prison town after the death of his brother Mitch (Kyle Chandler), who previously held the position. After being renewed for a fifth and final season, it was reported that Mayor of Kingstown was canceled by Paramount executive Cindy Holland against Sheridan’s wishes.
Nevertheless, Mayor of Kingstown remains steadfast on the global streaming charts for Paramount+, where it is currently in the sixth spot. The Sheridan show remains in the top 10 for 23 different countries, including Canada, Colombia, France, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Venezuela.
The series that Mayor of Kingstown is outperforming in the Paramount+ global top 10 are SpongeBob SquarePants, NCIS, The King of Queens, and MobLand. Ahead of it are South Park, Landman, Tulsa King, Yellowstone, and UFC, three of which are Taylor Sheridan shows.
After being exclusive to Paramount+ for its entire run thus far, this is changing with Mayor of Kingstown coming to Netflix in the U.S. later in 2026. It joins SEAL Team and Watson as Paramount+ series that are being licensed to Netflix, with CEO Ted Sarandos explaining that this is a wider initiative for the streamer. An exact release date for Netflix has not been announced yet, nor have the seasons that will be available to watch there.
Paramount’s decision to end the Jeremy Renner-led series with season 5 comes amid Sheridan’s upcoming exit from the studio. He signed a groundbreaking deal with NBCUniversal, but it does not officially begin until January 1, 2029, as his deal with Paramount goes through the end of 2028.
With an overall critics’ score of 65% on Rotten Tomatoes, reviews for Mayor of Kingstown have been mixed, but season 4 was the best-received yet with a perfect 100% Tomatometer score. ScreenRant‘s Grant Hermanns writes in his review that “it’s truly astounding how good Mayor of Kingstown season 4 is” and praised the episodes for having “some of the most exciting action sequences yet.” Given the 84% audience score, the overall reception has been more consistently positive since the show began in 2021.
