Texas and New Mexico reported on Friday 59 additional measles cases, which raises the total of 228 known infections in those states, where an outbreak that began in western Texas at the end of January has expanded, causing the first measles due to measles in the United States in a decade.

The centers for the control and prevention of diseases (CDC) of the US said in their first health alert to doctors about the outbreak that the risk of generalized measles in the EU remains low due to the solid immunization, surveillance programs and response capacity to outbreaks.

The agency indicated that the measles vaccine, paperas and rubella (SPR) remains the most important tool to prevent measles, and added that all US residents born after 1957 must have been vaccinated or have confirmed immunity in the disease laboratory.

In Texas, measles cases increased to 198 to March 7, an increase of 39, according to the data of the State Health Department. Of these, 30 were new cases in Gaines County, which now has a total of 137. A week ago, the State reported the measles of a non -vaccinated child who did not have previous health problems.

The largest measles outbreak in a decade has been the first important challenge for the US Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a skeptic of long -standing vaccines.

At a cabinet meeting last week, Kennedy initially fell from the news that a school -age child had died of measles, qualifying those outbreaks of ordinary and not mentioning the role of vaccination to prevent measles.

During the weekend, Kennedy published an opinion article in Fox News promoting the role of vaccination, but also said that vaccination is a personal choice and encouraged people to consult with their doctor.

He said that, in addition to vaccines, CDC sent vitamin A for the outbreak, which has shown to relieve symptoms in malnourished and poor people in vitamin A.

CDC said on their alert that doctors and public health officials should be attentive to patients who show measles symptoms, such as fever and rash.
