The 2024 elections will go down in history as the most expensive in US history, with a projected spending of $15.9 billion in all federal races, eclipsing the 2020 record of $15.1 billion and making 2016’s $6.5 billion look downright paltry. At the center of all this is a record-setting presidential race. Kamala Harris’ campaign committee and outside PACs have raised $1.6 billion, surpassing Trump’s $1.1 billion. Even before the final tallies are known, their combined haul of $2.7 billion already surpasses the $2 billion raised for Trump and Biden in 2020, and eclipses the $1.2 billion raised in 2016 for Trump and Clinton.
Harris has a lot of money behind her. Forbes counts at least 135 members of the three-comma club who have endorsed Harris or Trump this cycle: 83 for Harris, 52 for Trump. Harris is endorsed by Michael Bloomberg, Bill Gates, Laurene Powell Jobs and Melinda French Gates, the first two of whom have donated $50 million each in support of her campaign. Trump, for his part, has received almost $250 million from just two backers: Timothy Mellon, who donated more than $100 million, 10% of his estimated net worth of $1 billion, and Elon Musk, who has invested more than $120 million in pro-Trump PACs.
Trump breaks his own record as the richest presidential candidate of all time in the general election (if you count the primaries, Michael Bloomberg surpassed him in 2020). Trump’s net worth briefly soared to more than $8 billion in October thanks to a runaway surge in his publicly traded social media company Truth Social. After Truth Social’s stock cooled, his fortune dropped back to less than $6 billion today. Harris’s net worth is 0.1% of Trump’s.
